"presents evidence of the birth of an entirely new economy, an

environmentally sustainable economy represents the greatest investment
opportunity in history".

World Bank
The World Bank publishes annually its
World Development Report. This year's World Development Report,
the twenty-first in this annual series, examines the role of knowledge
in advancing economic and social well-being. Because knowledge is at the
heart of economic growth and sustainable development, understanding how
people and societies acquire and use it-and why they sometimes fail to
do so-is essential to improving people's lives, especially the lives of
the poor.

A global electronic database of
gender-related training materials is currently being developed as a joint
initiative of UNDP, UNICEF and UNIFEM in collaboration with the
Commonwealth of Learning. The purpose of the database is to organise
training materials into a readily accessible resource base, which could
provide useful information to institutions and individuals with expertise
and experience in gender training. It will also constitute an interactive
forum to engage a wide range of target audiences in critical discussions,
testing and adaptation of materials currently in use. The database will be
produced by June 2000, and will be hosted through the
