Millennium Forum

United Nations Secretary General: Kofi Annan

Address to the Millennium Forum

New York, 22 May 2000

Dear friends,

I am delighted to welcome you all to the United Nations. Warm greetings also to those watching in Geneva, Nairobi, Vienna, Buenos Aires, Chicago -- and on the Web.

The sight of so many of you in the General Assembly chamber this morning is living proof of your commitment to work with the United Nations and Governments to make the world a better place.

Not only do you bring to life the concept of  "We, the Peoples", in whose name our United Nations Charter was written; you bring to us the promise that "people power" can make the Charter work for all the world's peoples in the 21st century.

The Millennium Forum
(22-26 MAY 2000)

THE UN IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY

Opening Plenary -- Monday,
22 May 2000 -- 10:30 am
Opening Statement by Techeste Ahderom
Co-Chair, The Millennium Forum

Mr. Secretary General, Excellencies, Invited Guests, and Distinguished Participants and Observers

Welcome to the Millennium Forum.

In the coming days, we, the representatives of non-governmental organizations and other members of civil society from all over the world, will consult about humanity’s common future and, particularly, about the role of the United Nations in confronting the great global challenges of the 21st Century.

We are here to give the benefit of our expertise and experience  -- of which we have much -- in considering how the emerging global civilization can best establish a just and lasting peace, completely eradicate poverty from the face of our planet, and see that human rights everywhere are upheld -- at all times.

We are here to consider how best to set humanity on a path of sustainable development and protect our shared environment.

We are here to come to grips with the urgent challenges posed by the processes of globalization, an accelerating force in our world which has both potentially good and bad effects and which will require carefully coordinated efforts to ensure that only the good ones prevail.
